why iit are falling

IiT Kanpur is still ranked pretty well so it is not a downfall in a very sense of the term. However, I remember top 100 rankers choosing CSE at Kanpur to today not even one in the top 100 preferring Kanpur and thereby going to Delhi and Bombay. IITB attracts the highest top rankers - a trend that now is around a decade old. The preference it seems have changed the following way → IIT B = IIT D > IIT M > IIT Kgp > IIT K > IIT Hyderabad = IIT R = IIT Guwahati = IIT BHU > followed by second-generation IITs > followed by ISM and third generation IITs. The standard branch preference over the years have been → CSE > Electrical > Mathematics and Scientific Computing > Mech > Chem > Civil > MSE etc. IIT K as such has shifted to 5th place instead of being at #1.
I think one of the reasons that can be attributed to it is location disadvantage. Kanpur as a city has lost its charm and once the industrial town of UP and more popular than Lucknow today is marred with broken roads and closed industries, less exposure  extremely less airport connectivity, and even less cosmopolitanism. This in a way would have had an effect on campus placements. Additionally, Kanpur as an IIT has never believed in marketing themselves and if I go by Prof. Dheeraj Sanghi blogs there was a sort of leadership paralysis that had plagued the institute. Location wise, IIT Delhi is right in the middle of the bustling and cosmopolitan city of Delhi at Hauz Khaz, IIT Bombay right in front of the Hiranandani township in Powai - one of the most localities, near the busiest intersection of JVLR and yet surrounded by Powai and Vihar lakes (and of course, its Mumbai). IIT Madras is in the middle of the metro city of Chennai as well. The argument fails when you compare Kgp because Kharagpur is a small town with only two famous things IIT and a Railway Institute and is way less known and popular than Kanpur and is connected via Kolkata only via air-route yet somehow Kgp has had a better rank opening and closing than Kanpur. So it is something beyond location as well but location plays a very significant role in the popularity and opportunities that an institute gets; Gandhinagar and Hyderabad both enjoy supreme location as compared to others in say Ropar and Jodhpur and this definitely had some impact apart from other things in preference for students and most importantly faculty who would want their spouses to also work in the city and send their kids to good schools in the vicinity.
